Security researchers at iProov have uncovered a sophisticated iOS video injection tool capable of bypassing biometric verification systems. The discovery highlights a new stage in fraud techniques that exploit deepfake technology to compromise digital identity checks. According to iProov, the tool appears to originate in China and is designed to inject synthetic video directly into verification applications.
How the Attack Works
The tool targets jailbroken devices running iOS 15 or later. Once installed, the compromised phone can be connected to a remote server that feeds deepfake video streams into verification apps, replacing the physical camera feed entirely. This allows attackers to present synthetic media that appears authentic to systems relying on facial recognition for identity verification.
“The discovery of this iOS tool marks a significant breakthrough in identity fraud and confirms the trend of industrialized attacks,” said Andrew Newell, Chief Scientific Officer at iProov. The company notes that the method goes beyond earlier fraud attempts by introducing the potential for scalable, automated attacks.
Implications for Identity Systems
The emergence of this tool is particularly concerning for organizations that depend on single-point verification or basic liveness detection. These methods may not be strong enough to withstand synthetic media injected directly into the verification process. The finding also comes as companies weigh the risks of deepfakes in biometric authentication, with some already reassessing their approaches to security and identity verification.
iProov recommends a multi-layered defense strategy to counter evolving fraud techniques. Suggested measures include verifying identities against trusted records, deploying synthetic media detection tools, ensuring real-time interaction between the user and system, and implementing managed detection and response services. By combining these approaches, organizations can reduce the risk of compromise by increasingly sophisticated attacks.
The discovery reinforces the importance of stronger protections in sectors where identity verification is critical, including healthcare and financial services. As attackers adopt tools that bypass conventional safeguards, institutions face growing pressure to adopt dynamic, real-time risk assessment models capable of identifying and stopping synthetic media intrusions.
