Iowa Expands Mobile ID Program with Google Wallet Integration for Driver’s Licenses and State IDs

Iowa residents can now store their driver’s licenses and state IDs in Google Wallet, expanding the state’s digital identity offerings across major mobile platforms. The new functionality is the result of a collaboration between IDEMIA Public Security and the Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT). It adds Google Wallet to Iowa’s existing digital ID ecosystem, which already includes Apple Wallet (since October 2024) and Samsung Wallet (since July 2024).

The integration allows Android users to use their smartphones to present valid identification at Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints and participating businesses. This move brings Iowa in line with a growing number of states adopting mobile ID solutions. Enrollment in the program is conducted directly through the Google Wallet app, without requiring users to download the separate Iowa Mobile ID app unless they prefer to use it independently.

Secure and Private Identity Verification

To add a digital ID, users open Google Wallet, navigate to “ID Card,” select Iowa, and complete a secure process that includes a scan of the physical license and a facial recognition step for identity verification. Once provisioned, the digital ID can be presented at over 200 TSA checkpoints nationwide, including Des Moines International Airport and Eastern Iowa Airport, as well as at select retail and service locations.

“Adding your Iowa driver’s license to Google Wallet is a smart, secure way to carry your ID, and a big win for convenience,” said Kathleen Meradith-Eyers, Director of the Iowa DOT Motor Vehicle Division. “Mobile ID puts you in control of your information while making everyday moments, like airport travel and age verification, fast, easy and private.”

The digital IDs are protected by device-level security, encryption, and biometric authentication features built into Android smartphones. The system ensures that personal data is only shared with a user’s explicit approval during each ID presentation. While convenient and secure, the digital ID does not replace the physical card. The Iowa DOT encourages residents to continue carrying their physical IDs for situations where mobile versions are not yet accepted.

Part of a Broader National Trend

The launch is part of Iowa’s long-term digital transformation initiative, supported by IDEMIA Public Security. The two partners began working together on mobile ID solutions in 2021 and have since expanded to support all three major wallet platforms. Iowa joins states like West Virginia, which rolled out Samsung Wallet support for mobile IDs in February 2025, in making digital identity a practical reality for day-to-day use.

The Iowa DOT and IDEMIA are continuing to expand the number of locations where digital IDs are accepted, including more government services and private-sector businesses. Applications range from age verification and transportation to building access, reflecting growing public interest in secure, mobile-first identity solutions.
