Investors Want a Piece of Arm: AI Update

Arm’s forthcoming IPO is over five times oversubscribed, according to its bankers. Investor excitement remains palpable despite a recent drop in profits from Arm’s business activities in the mobile sector, where its chip designs proliferate. In a pitch video shown to potential investors, Arm CEO Rene Haas asserted that “AI is going to be everywhere and it all runs on Arm.” It is expected to start trading on the Nasdaq on September 14.

Nvidia has established a partnership with the large Indian conglomerate Reliance that will focus on the development of AI applications for its telecommunications arm. Nvidia is also reportedly preparing to announce an AI partnership with Tata Group, another Indian conglomerate, focused on the latter’s automotive, consultancy, and communications businesses.

A leaked Google memo claims that researchers using open-sourced tools are now making AI systems comparable to those based on proprietary models. Their success is credited to ‘low-rank adaptation’ (or ‘LoRa’), a technique used to quickly optimize a Large Language Model for a certain task, rather than train one from scratch. “The barrier to entry for training and experimentation has dropped from the total output of a major research organisation to one person, an evening, and a beefy laptop,” the memo claims.

US startup Delphi has raised $2.7 million in a new funding round. The company’s goal is to let users make AI clones of themselves by feeding its model emails, chat transcripts, audio files, and so on. Delphi has teamed up with the voice biometrics startup ElevenLabs to enable its AI system to create a convincing clone – or deepfake, if you like – of the user’s voice.

Video conferencing and communications specialist Yaelink has announced a new, 3rd-Gen MVC Series Microsoft Teams Rooms System, a collaboration with Microsoft to bring AI technologies into the latter’s video conferencing platform. These technologies include voice and facial recognition, which are used to display the names of known participants on video calls, as well as the integration of Copilot, Microsoft’s AI chatbot assistant.

ID R&D has developed a new user authentication solution specifically designed for ChatGPT. IDVoice for ChatGPT leverages the company’s voice recognition technology to verify an end user during a speech-enabled ChatGPT session, in which a user can vocally interact with OpenAI’s famous chatbot. The system was demoed at this week’s Voice & AI conference in Washington, D.C.

Corsight AI has teamed up with Anekanta AI and Advent IM on a facial recognition service focused on compliance with ethical and regulatory guidelines. Anekanta AI is a UK-based consultancy offering guidance on such matters, particularly with respect to European Union regulations, while Advent IM – also based in the UK – is an IT and physical security consultancy. Their basic “FaceComply” service is being offered for free.

The chatbot’s take: We wanted to see if Bing had any investment advice regarding Arm’s IPO. (Not that anyone should take it.)
