Inverid Joins FIDO Alliance to Advance NFC Document Authentication Standards

Inverid has officially joined the FIDO (Fast Identity Online) Alliance, advancing its position as a contributor to the development of secure, passwordless authentication technologies. The move brings Inverid’s expertise in NFC-based document authentication into FIDO’s expanding efforts to standardize digital identity verification across global ecosystems.

Inverid, best known for its ReadID solution, recently achieved ETSI TS 119 461 certification, the highest EU standard for unattended remote identity proofing. This certification reinforces Inverid’s compliance with eIDAS 2.0 regulations and positions it to support stringent anti-money laundering (AML) and counter-terrorism financing (CTF) requirements across Europe.

By joining the FIDO Alliance, Inverid will contribute to the advancement of the organization’s DocAuth (Document Authentication) specifications—emerging standards designed to authenticate official documents such as passports and ID cards in digital onboarding scenarios. These standards are expected to bolster defenses against document fraud, deepfakes, and identity spoofing, particularly as governments and enterprises shift toward digital-first identity systems.

Inverid’s identity verification technology enables users to verify documents by reading the NFC chip embedded in ePassports or national IDs. The process ensures document authenticity through cryptographic checks, with tamper detection and real-time verification—all without transmitting sensitive personal data. This aligns with FIDO’s goal of decentralizing authentication and eliminating reliance on traditional passwords.

The company’s NFC-first approach is further supported by partnerships with firms such as Veriff, enabling fallback to optical verification methods when NFC chips are unavailable—broadening the accessibility of its solution. This dual-mode architecture increases flexibility for identity verification across use cases like financial onboarding, travel, and public-sector authentication services.

In the broader authentication landscape, NFC-based verification offers superior resistance to spoofing and tampering compared to video-based liveness checks or manual reviews. Its machine-verifiable cryptographic signatures are increasingly preferred by governments and regulated industries, especially as passwordless and decentralized identity solutions gain ground.

The FIDO Alliance itself is expanding beyond authentication into identity binding, seeking to create interoperable standards for identity verification in high-risk applications. Recent FIDO research and certifications have shown a marked increase in enterprise adoption of passkeys in the U.S. and UK—underscoring demand for interoperable, mobile-first, and passwordless alternatives to legacy credentials.

As DocAuth standards evolve, Inverid’s participation is expected to help establish more secure and verifiable digital onboarding flows for industries such as banking, healthcare, and travel. The company’s contributions may also influence how identity documents are embedded into future digital wallets—both public and private—by setting best practices for cryptographic verification and device-side security.
