Biometric smart card developer Zwipe has announced a new access control solution called Zwipe ID.
It’s essentially a smart card with a built-in fingerprint authentication system, and it’s compatible with MIFARE DESFire and MIFARE Classic Access Control systems. Zwipe ID employs on-card enrollment and keeps the user’s biometric data on the card; and the company says its new offering can recharge energy via the access control readers with which it interacts, meaning it doesn’t require a battery.
The new device represents a bit of a pivot on Zwipe’s part: The company has previously garnered considerable interest in its technology with respect to payment card applications, with Zwipe even having partnered with MasterCard to bring biometric security to its own cards; but the company has also long recognized that its technology has access control applications as well.
Commenting on the new offering in a statement, Zwipe’s N.A. Director of Sales, Bob Fee, asserted that the new device will help to bring his company’s products to “a much wider market,” allowing it to target “corporate environments, educational markets and governmental identification applications.”
