Integrated Biometrics has unveiled what it’s calling the world’s smallest, lightweight, FBI-certified palm scanner. Dubbed “Mannix”, the device takes the form factor of a sleek mobile tablet, and features smartphone connectivity.
Integrated Biometrics has built its reputation as a provider of mobile, sophisticated biometric devices designed for in-the-field use by agents in law enforcement, forensics, special operations, and other government bodies requiring hi-tech gear. These include products like the Sherlock and Watson Mini fingerprint scanners, and the rugged Five-0 ten-print scanner.
The company’s latest device makes effective use of its patented Zero Bezel Film (ZTX) technology, which is durable with respect to wear and tear, and makes the device easier to clean by eliminating the typical screen bezels that tend to collect dirt and debris.
Perhaps more importantly, it leverages Integrated Biometrics’ LES (light-emitting sensor) technology, which is capable of capturing high-quality images even in direct sunlight, while scanning through the grease, oil, water, and dust contaminants that are typical of human skin. This means high-quality scans across a wide range of environmental conditions.
This tech is typical of Integrated Biometrics, which has deep engineering expertise at the core of its team. CEO Shawn O’Rourke, who took the helm in 2021, has a Master of Science in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Washington and an MBA in Technology Management from Arizona State University, and is considered a world-leading expert in the thin film transistor technology that is central to its LES tech.
While Mannix’s under-the-hood components are foundational to its technological sophistication, Integrated Biometrics’ team is keen to focus on the device’s overall usability.
“What makes Mannix so unique from other scanners is that it is so small, lightweight and rugged, yet it can be powered simply by your mobile phone,” explained EVP David Gerulski.
“Mannix is the answer to long-awaited market demand and is the perfect addition to IB’s hardware lineup,” O’Rourke added.
The compact device measures 161 mm x 161 mm x 20 mm, with an active scanning area of 127 mm x 127 mm. It weighs in at 1.3 lbs, has 500 ppi resolution, and is FBI Appendix F-certified. And it has a USB-C Port for smartphone connectivity.
