Integrated Biometrics Coats Fingerprint Scanners With NBD Nano’s Antimicrobial Solution

Integrated Biometrics (IB) is making its fingerprint scanners safer and more durable through a new partnership with NBD Nanotechnologies. NBD Nano is a surface coating specialist, and will be supplying IB with transparent RepelFlex MBED coating for its full line of fingerprint devices.

The ultra-thin RepelFlex coating boasts antimicrobial properties, and is also resistant to stains and scratches. As a result, it will make IB’s devices more durable, and minimize the microbial growth that would normally be expected on a device that gets used by multiple people. The coating will make the devices easier to clean and safer to the touch, insofar as people will be less likely to pick up a disease when they place their fingers on an IB scanner.

The stain and scratch protection, meanwhile, will allow IB’s scanners to withstand heavy use and more rugged conditions. The RepelFlex coating will not affect print quality or matching accuracy, delivering a high level of performance over extended periods, even when there is not enough time (or enough disinfectant) to clean the device between each use.

IB is perhaps best known for its Kojak line of fingerprint scanners, though its full portfolio also includes the popular Five-0 and Watson Mini devices. The company’s various offerings have become popular with law enforcement and border control agencies, and with humanitarian organizations that can use the technology to capture fingerprints while in the field. Most notably, the French police have used the Watson Mini to identify disaster victims, while Prodigy Systems has used the Five-0 to help distribute resources to refugees in Yemen.

IB added liveness detection to its product line in March of 2020.
