Innovatrics Provides Facial Recognition Tech for Honduras Airport

A new airport in Honduras will be using Innovatrics’ SmartFace facial recognition technology for venue security. To that end, SmartFace will be installed on 22 surveillance cameras located throughout the Palmerola facility. Those cameras will help airport operators watch for threats and suspicious individuals, and help keep travelers and members of the general public safe.

The Palmerola airport is currently under construction at a site roughly 70 kilometers from the Honduran capital city of Tegucigalpa. The area’s existing Toncontin Airport is located in the middle of the city, but is challenging for pilots because it has a short runway and because Tegucigalpa itself sits amidst a high mountain range and several residential districts.

The new Palmerola facility, on the other hand, is being built on the site of an old air base in Comayagua, on land that is far more favorable to air travel. The operators are hoping that a modern airport will turn Honduras into a transportation hub for the broader Central American region, and believe that Innovatrics’ facial recognition system will be a key piece of infrastructure and an important part of that digital transformation.

“This project leverages the ability of SmartFace to process a number of video streams simultaneously,” said Innovatrics Chief Sales Officer Peter Martis. “It will be capable of detecting suspicious persons through the more than 20 cameras strategically installed around the premises in real-time.”

Officials have indicated that Palmerola will be able to handle 1.5 million passengers on an annual basis once the airport is up and running. SmartFace, meanwhile, has previously been integrated into the YOUNiQ access control solution from Precise Biometrics. The platform offers passive liveness detection on live video feeds, and finished with a top-three spot in the latest edition of the Department of Homeland Security’s Biometric Technology Rally.
