Innovatrics Improves Edge Processing Capabilities With SmartFace 5

Innovatrics has unveiled the latest version of its flagship SmartFace facial recognition and surveillance platform. SmartFace 5 improves on its predecessors with a new cascaded architecture that allows the system to scale to cover a surveillance network with an unlimited number of cameras.

The platform accomplishes that feat with the help of edge processing technology. SmartFace 5 allows video footage to be processed on the camera itself, before it ever gets sent to a central network. As a result, SmartFace minimizes the amount of information that needs to get processed centrally or in the cloud, which in turn makes it possible to add new cameras to the network without placing any extra strain on the existing infrastructure.

According to Innovatrics, that scalability makes SmartFace 5 ideal for large-scale smart city deployments, and for large venues like airports, stadiums, and shopping centers. The platform can send a notification to administrators whenever it spots an individual on a dedicated watchlist, or when it spots certain kinds of events and behaviors. In that regard, administrators can customize the system to specify what behaviors they are looking to prevent.

Either way, SmartFace’s notifications will allow venue staff to respond to an incident in a more timely fashion. The platform processes video footage in real-time, and has been integrated with numerous watchlists with hundreds of thousands of individual faces.

“Our aim is to prevent security incidents at the earliest moment possible by utilizing our trusted facial recognition algorithms and real-time notification system,” said SmartFace Development Manager Michal Vilagi.

SmartFace 5 will be featured in the Palmerola airport deployment in Honduras that was first announced in October. A prior version of the platform achieved a top-three score in last year’s DHS Biometric Technology Rally, while Innovatrics itself has recently taken steps to improve its liveness detection capabilities.
