Innovatrics is giving people a better look at the document recognition technology in its Digital Onboarding Toolkit (DOT). The company noted that it is difficult to spot a forged document with a smartphone camera, and that in many cases true fakes can only be spotted with a document scanner dedicated to that purpose.
However, the Innovatrics Toolkit was designed to overcome those limitations, using several different techniques to verify the authenticity of a document. The process begins when the user takes a photo of their document. The Toolkit extracts the biographic information displayed on the surface of that document, as well as a biometric template of the face in the image.
From there, the Toolkit compares the template to a selfie of the user to make sure the two are a match. In doing so, it estimates the age and gender of the person depicted in the selfie, and makes sure that those estimates are consistent with the biographic information on the ID. The Tookit also searches for signs of tampering, and will flag an ID as suspicious if the color profile is off, or if certain fields were replaced with strips of paper.
Innovatrics can provide an even greater level of assurance when scanning newer documents that have a Machine Readable Zone (MRZ) or an RFID chip. The information in an RFID chip cannot be modified, while modifying an MRZ requires considerable expertise. As a result, the Toolkit can cross-reference that MRZ or RIFD data with the information extracted from the photo, as long as the user has a smartphone with NFC-scanning capabilities.
The Digital Onboarding Toolkit can read information written in Bengali, Arabic, and Cyrillic, in addition to Latin script. Innovatrics has provided onboarding services for a number of public and private entities, including Slovakia’s Partners SK Group and several financial institutions in Latin America.
