Innovatrics Brings Passive Liveness Detection to Live Video Feeds

Innovatrics has updated its SmartFace security platform to enable passive liveness detection in real time. The solution can be paired with a surveillance camera, and will send an immediate notification whenever someone tries to trick a live video feed with a mask, a photo, or some other spoofing technique.

To train the algorithm, Innovatrics challenged it with hundreds of thousands of spoof attempts, and also presented it with a comparable number of real faces. In doing so, the company was able to build a solution that would be able to distinguish the real faces from the spoofs in a real world setting. The improved algorithm can now spot photos, video recordings, masks, and 3D sculptures made with a variety of different materials, all without any direct engagement from the person being scanned.

SmartFace also has pedestrian and joint detection capabilities, and uses facial recognition to verify the identities of registered users as they enter a facility. The solution can help organizations streamline their access control procedures while still guarding against a range of increasingly sophisticated fraud attacks.

Innovatrics’ facial recognition technology recently completed Level 2 of the iBeta Presentation Attack Detection test, which measures a solution’s passive liveness detection capabilities. The company passed the Level 1 exam back in October, and has since secured a top-three spot in the Department of Homeland Security’s Biometric Technology Rally.

SmartFace has already been integrated into the Milestone XProtect video management software platform, and into the YOUNiQ access control solution from Precise Biometrics. Innovatrics itself has previously argued that SmartFace is particularly useful to investigators, since the platform can analyze hours of raw video footage to find a person of interest in a fraction of the time that a human being would need to complete the task.
