India’s biometric travel verification system Digi Yatra has reached over 9 million active users, demonstrating strong adoption of the contactless passenger processing technology at the country’s airports. The platform currently averages 30,000 new app downloads daily, building on its initial rollout across seven major airports in 2022.
The system uses self-sovereign identity (SSI) and face-biometric technology to enable seamless passenger processing at airport terminals. Powered by technology from industry leaders including IDEMIA and SITA, Digi Yatra allows travelers to move through checkpoints using facial recognition for identity verification, eliminating the need for repeated document checks.
While the platform’s growth trajectory suggests continued expansion through 2025, the implementation has faced several challenges. Privacy advocates have raised concerns about the system’s data collection and storage practices, leading to enhanced security measures including data encryption and strict retention policies.
The Digi Yatra initiative forms part of India’s broader push toward digital transformation of transportation infrastructure, with Noida International Airport set to become the country’s first fully digital airport. The system’s biometric capabilities match global trends in aviation security and passenger processing automation, following similar implementations by international carriers like Emirates Airlines and American Airlines.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) continues to expand the system’s footprint, with plans to deploy the technology across additional airports nationwide. The expansion includes enhanced features for international travel and integration with other digital identity initiatives, establishing India as a leader in modernizing air travel infrastructure.
