The Indian city of Khammam is expanding its use of biometric time and attendance tracking for city workers, reports The Hindu.
While the Khammam Municipal Corporation had already installed such a system for its office workers, it’s now expanding it to all its staff in the field, including sanitation workers. It’s a considerable expansion; while the KMC has about 200 office workers, its total staff numbers close to 900. Explaining the move to The Hindu, KMC Municipal Commissioner B. Srinivas Rao said it’s intended to improve the overall functioning of the civic body, and is already proving useful in accurately tracking staff.
Given that India is the home of what is perhaps the world’s most ambitious biometric identity program, the move comes as little surprise. Early this year the national government announced plans to link staff salaries to biometric attendance tracking, and such measures have also been rolled out for college faculty and for hospital staff elsewhere in the country. And as citizens grow increasingly accustomed to such technology, it’s fair to expect many more attendance tracking deployments to come.
