Security agencies in India plan to deploy advanced artificial intelligence-based security systems at and around the Red Fort in Delhi for upcoming Independence Day celebrations. The deployments will involve CCTVs with video analytics features, capable of vehicle number plate recognition, facial recognition, people movement counting, and other security functions like intrusion detection and audio monitoring.
The Red Fort, also known as Lal Qila, is a historic fort located in Delhi, India. It was the main residence of the Mughal emperors for nearly 200 years, starting with Emperor Shah Jahan in the mid-17th century. The fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is famous for its massive walls made of red sandstone, which give it its name.
It plays a significant role in India’s Independence Day celebrations, where the Prime Minister of India hoists the national flag and delivers a speech to the nation every year on August 15.
The planned AI-powered cameras will also be used to monitor the entry and exit of people within the premises and estimate crowd sizes. Additionally, the cameras will have the ability to detect abandoned baggage and alert authorities to potential threats. The facial recognition system will be used to identify faces in real-time and compare them with a “Watch List” database, alerting the control room to any matches.
Different zones will have customized alarm settings based on the sensitivity and priority of each area.
Speaking to local media, a senior government official highlighted that while facial recognition systems have been in use in the country for several years, this year will see the introduction of Number Plate Recognition (NPR) technology. This will enable real-time detection and recording of vehicle number plates, integrating with multiple cameras to capture driver images as well.
The Delhi police plan to deploy over 700 CCTVs, with more than 150 equipped with video analytics features, and over 10,000 security personnel will be stationed at the Red Fort and other critical areas in Delhi.
