Voatz‘s mobile voting platform has received an important stamp of approval. The company has announced that Pro V&V, an independent Voting System Test Laboratory, has reviewed its solution and found it to be compliant with the requirements for United States voting systems.
The Voatz platform is essentially a mobile app for electronic voting in elections. Importantly, it’s based on blockchain ledger technology, helping to ensure that voting records cannot be tampered with; and it supports biometric authentication as well.
According to Voatz, its solution has now been used in 67 elections spanning across cities, counties, universities, nonprofits, and political parties. At the end of June, for example, Voatz was used to facilitate voting in the Republican Party of South Dakota’s virtual convention.
Pro V&V, meanwhile, is one of only two testing labs that has both been certified by the US Election Assistance Commission and accredited through the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s National Laboratories Accreditation Program. The lab concluded that Voatz “meets the applicable requirements set forth for voting systems in the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) 2015 Voluntary Voting System Guidelines (VVSG), Version 1.1,” with certain clarifications and exceptions noted in its 47-page report.
The lab’s stamp of approval could be important in paving the way for further deployments of Voatz’s mobile voting system at a time when there is deep concern over the issue of conducting elections safely amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We are pleased with Pro V&V’s conclusions that Voatz operates exactly as it’s designed to operate,” commented Voatz CEO and co-founder Nimit Sawhney. “Their findings confirm our expectations, and add further fuel to support our mission that citizens can vote securely using a smartphone application and have total confidence their ballot is counted while remaining fully secret.”
