Acuity Market Intelligence has released a new report titled “The Global National eID Industry Report: 2014 Edition”, projecting a favorable future for chip-based electronic identity cards over the next five years. According to Acuity, by 2018 half of the world’s population will have chip based national eID cards.
Nearly 3.4 billion national eID cards are expected to be issued between now and 2018. According to Acuity, this increased eID coverage includes almost all of Europe, and 60 percent of the entire figure will be accounted for by Asia.
Acuity principal Maxine Most breaks down the stats further, saying, “In addition to the 3.4 billion chip-based National eIDs issued between 2014 and 2018, another 300 million National ID cards will integrate biometrics into non chip-based card programs.”
Most cites recent national ID news as validating Acuity’s projections.
“India and the Philippines are reviving efforts to introduce National eID cards to support their national identity programs,” she says. “Turkey has announced the integration of biometrics into their National eID card scheme. South Korea is facing intense pressure to replace their National ID system due to rampant data breeches and fraud. And Nigeria appears to be making progress on their National eID program after years of promise and false starts.”
The Acuity Report divides national ID programs into three categories, including one for initiatives that rely on biometric registration, and breaks down the data country to country, by region and as a global unit. “The Global National eID Industry Report: 2014 Edition” is available to order from the Acuity Market Intelligence website.
Acuity bills itself as technology strategy and research consultancy. Recently it released a market brief on the mobile biometrics market in a post-Apple Pay world, while earlier this year the firm released encouraging analysis of the global ABC eGates and Kiosks market.
