Imprivata has launched a new facial recognition system for patient identification, and it has already been integrated into the widely-used Epic electronic health records platform.
The Imprivata Biometric Patient Identity solution can accommodate obstructions like face masks and glasses, and is designed to cater to the demands of the HIPAA regulation. It operates with standard computer webcams, avoiding the need for specialized hardware. It is designed to be HIPAA-compliant, ensuring that biometric data is used solely for identification purposes and kept secure within the healthcare organization’s system.
The innovation aims to replace manual and error-prone patient check-in processes, thereby reducing administrative burdens, operational inefficiencies, and the risk of medical errors, while also fostering a more personal connection between healthcare providers and patients.
Imprivata, founded in 2002, is a healthcare IT security company specializing in identity and access management solutions. Initially focused on streamlining clinical workflows and enhancing security within healthcare organizations, Imprivata expanded its offerings to encompass biometric patient identification. The company’s patient ID solutions have previously used biometrics like palm vein scanning to ensure accurate patient identification.
Now, Imprivata’s new facial recognition solution could make a big impact, especially given its EPIC integrations.
EPIC is a comprehensive Electronic Health Record (EHR) system used by many healthcare organizations worldwide. It centralizes patient medical records, making information like medical history, diagnoses, treatment plans, medications, and test results easily accessible to authorized healthcare providers. EPIC streamlines processes, including appointment scheduling, billing, and communication within the healthcare system.
Its widespread adoption in major hospitals and medical systems, particularly top-ranked ones in the US, highlights its prominence and dominance in the healthcare software industry.
Imprivata is inviting healthcare professionals to learn more about its new solution by attending a special webinar presentation planned for March 6, 2024.
