Imprivata’s EPCS Self-enrollment Solution Features Aware’s Knomi Tech

Imprivata has launched a new self-enrollment solution for prescribers of Electronic Prescriptions for Controlled Substances (EPCS), and it’s using biometric technology from Aware, Inc.

The solution revolves around facial recognition and document reading technologies, enabling end users to confirm their identities by uploading a selfie image along with pictures of their official identity documents. Aware’s contribution is ‘Knomi’, one of the company’s most important market offerings; Aware updated Knomi at the end of last year to perform better with users wearing face masks, and the solution won a 2020 IT Cybersecurity Excellence Award from Internet Telephony Magazine in February.

Now, with its integration into Imprivata’s solution, Knomi is enabling healthcare services providers to benefit from improved workflows, and further encouraging the broader trend of the rising use of Electronic Medical Records.

“This technology partnership with Aware allows us to deliver a solution that adheres to an increasing need for mobile, remote and virtual workflows, which requires a robust digital identity strategy,” explained Imprivata CEO Guz Malezis. “This application of mobile facial recognition bolsters cybersecurity while meeting DEA and other compliance requirements.”

The collaboration was first announced last month, when it was revealed that IDEMA was also involved in the project. IDEMIA’s role was to provide facial recognition technology, which would be bolstered by Aware’s liveness detection technology that can detect the signs of ‘spoofing attacks’ in which synthetic biometrics are used to mimic genuine end user credentials.

For Aware, the collaboration marks an important extension of its biometric technology into the healthcare sector.
