IDFC Bank Launches Biometric Payment App Using Aadhaar Authentication

IDFC Bank has launched IDFC Aadhaar Pay, a new biometric payment application developed in partnership with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). The app is an important step in India’s push toward digital financial inclusion, enabling merchants to accept payments through customers’ Aadhaar-linked bank accounts.

The new payment solution leverages India’s robust Aadhaar biometric authentication system, which recently received enhanced security features through approved anti-spoofing technology. This integration allows customers to complete transactions using only their Aadhaar number and fingerprint verification, eliminating the need for physical cards, mobile phones, or PINs.

The launch aligns with broader government initiatives to expand digital payment adoption. Earlier this year, India mandated Aadhaar authentication for welfare payments, demonstrating the government’s commitment to biometric verification in financial transactions. The system builds upon the success of the Aadhaar-enabled Payment System (AePS), which has processed hundreds of millions of transactions since its inception.

For merchants, particularly small businesses, IDFC Aadhaar Pay offers a cost-effective alternative to traditional Point of Sale (POS) machines. The app requires only a smartphone with a connected biometric reader, significantly reducing the hardware investment needed to accept digital payments.

The implementation comes as India’s digital payment technologies gain international recognition, with the recent adoption of India’s UPI system by the UAE for cross-border payments. This expansion of India’s digital payment infrastructure demonstrates the growing global interest in the country’s financial technology architecture.
