Norway-based fingerprint sensor developer IDEX has secured a new distributor for China: Comtech has signed on and already placed its initial orders for the company’s sensors.
In a statement announcing the new partnership, IDEX CEO Hemant Mardia asserted that “[t]he Chinese market for fingerprint sensors is large and growing,” and said the agreement “ensures that we have sufficient presence and logistical capacity” to serve that market.
The partnership emerges in the same week that another key vendor, fingerprint algorithm software provider Precise Biometrics, lamented a challenging “competitive situation” in the mobile biometrics market that could squeeze sensor makers’ revenues. But, like other major biometric technology vendors, IDEX has been looking beyond the mobile market for its solutions, with its major new focus being biometric smart cards.
That approach is evidently paying off. Commenting on the partnership, Comtech CEO Jeffrey Kang said that demand is expanding in new market segments “such as IoT and smart cards,” adding, “IDEX’s unique silicon and off-chip sensing solutions will have a lot of potential in this market.”
News of the partnership comes soon after IDEX’s announcement that it had secured a new sales agent in the US, further underscoring the company’s effort to expand its global reach.
