“In IDEX’s system, a smart card – eg. a biometric credit card – would be mailed to an end user together with a lightweight receptacle featuring an integrated power source. The card is inserted into the receptacle, and then the user registers their fingerprint on the card.”
IDEX Biometrics has won an Australian patent for its enrollment system for biometric smart cards, the company has announced.
In a statement, IDEX called the IP a “foundational patent” for its on-card enrollment system, which allows a user to register their fingerprint on a new biometric card without the need to visit a bank branch or other external location. In IDEX’s system, a smart card – eg. a biometric credit card – would be mailed to an end user together with a lightweight receptacle featuring an integrated power source. The card is inserted into the receptacle, and then the user registers their fingerprint on the card. From there, the card can be used freely in transactions, scanning the user’s fingerprint in the process for authentication.
IDEX Biometrics says it first began filing patent applications for its on-card enrollment systems in 2017, with the company having been granted important US patents earlier this year. IDEX says this latest approval from IP Australia is for a filing “in the same patent family” as those US patents.
“With its highly developed financial services sector and large private wealth market, Australia is a key geography for payment providers rolling out new biometric payment card services across the APAC region,” the company said.
Elaborating further on the on-card enrollment system itself, IDEX Biometrics CEO Stan Swearingen said, “We expect unconnected remote on-card enrollment to become the de-facto standard for biometric smart card enrollment worldwide and IDEX is ideally positioned with the granting of this foundational patent.”
