Welcome to FindBiometrics’ digest of identity industry news. Here’s what you need to know about the world of digital identity and biometrics today:
Funding Diversions Will Push Biometrics Program to 2049, Says TSA Head
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) faces delays in deploying facial recognition technology at U.S. airports due to insufficient funding. Despite the technology’s potential to enhance checkpoint screening efficiency, the agency’s current budget would push full implementation to 2049. TSA Administrator David Pekoske has highlighted the need for increased funding, suggesting that with dedicated resources, the project could be completed by the end of the decade. However, the diversion of security fee revenue, intended for aviation security, has hindered the TSA’s ability to invest in such measures.
IDEMIA Brings Cloud ABIS to Florida County
The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office in Florida has become the first law enforcement agency in the US to implement IDEMIA’s STORM ABIS, a cloud-based Automated Biometric Identification System. The platform streamlines fingerprint identification by consolidating access to county, state, and federal databases. Its cloud-based architecture allows for remote access, and its advanced algorithms enhance investigative capabilities. The implementation has reportedly improved efficiency and increased case processing capacity for the Volusia Sheriff’s Office Latent Print Unit.
Zimbabwe Pioneers Biometric Border Control in Southern Africa
Zimbabwe is leading the way in Southern Africa by becoming the first country to implement an advanced biometric border control system. Using fingerprint and iris biometrics, the system aims to automate and enhance border control processes, improving security and efficiency for both travelers and border agencies. It will be piloted at key entry points and will feature e-gates for self-service immigration clearance. The implementation is expected to streamline travel experiences, improve coordination among border agencies, and strengthen overall border security.
Banks are ‘Miles Behind’ Deepfake Threat, Says NCC Co-founder
Michael Marcotte, co-founder of the National Cybersecurity Center, warns that banks are lagging in addressing the rising threat of deepfakes and presentation attacks. He criticizes their reliance on traditional KYC methods like ID card and facial verification, deeming them outdated against AI-generated deepfakes. Marcotte highlights the ease with which even individuals with minimal technical skills can create convincing deepfakes, posing a significant risk for financial institutions. His concerns are echoed by recent high-profile fraud cases involving deepfakes, emphasizing the need for enhanced security measures in the face of evolving AI technologies.
Illinois Legislature Passes Milestone Biometric Privacy Amendment
Illinois House of Representatives has approved SB2979, a bill aiming to amend the state’s Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA). If signed into law, the bill would significantly reduce liability for businesses by shifting from per-scan to per-person penalties for BIPA violations. It would also allow electronic consent for biometric data collection, replacing the current requirement for written consent. The bill aims to address concerns that BIPA’s current provisions are overly burdensome for businesses. However, some critics argue that the bill doesn’t go far enough and should apply retroactively to help companies already facing substantial fines under BIPA. The final decision rests with Governor JB Pritzker, who will review the legislation.
Aussie Gov’t Passes Digital ID Bill
The Australian government has passed the Digital ID Bill 2024, establishing a framework for a national digital ID system. This initiative aims to enhance online security and privacy by reducing the need to share physical identity documents. Businesses will be able to join the system by 2026, creating a more secure digital ecosystem. The government has also allocated $288 million to support the implementation and expansion of the digital identity system, including upgrades to existing platforms like myGov and myGov ID.
