FACEIO Launches Age Verification Widget for Web and Mobile Apps
FACEIO has introduced a new Age Verification Widget as part of its FACEIO SDK suite, designed to enhance web and mobile applications. The widget uses facial algorithms to conduct real-time age verification, helping businesses comply with age-related regulations in various regions. Aimed at reducing legal risks and fostering a safer digital environment, it offers quick and accurate differentiation between adults and minors. Major Distribution Effort Gets Underway for IDEX Biometric Card
IDEX Biometrics has announced a partnership with one of South Asia’s largest smart card manufacturers to start producing biometric payment cards. This collaboration aims to expand IDEX’s presence across the Asia Pacific, the Middle East, Africa, and the USA. The unnamed partner, with a capacity to produce 25 million cards per month, will begin card distribution by year’s end. These cards integrate a fingerprint sensor for enhanced transaction security and convenience, aligning with IDEX’s strategic growth in the biometric payment card market.
Movano Health Gets Clinical Trial, Investment Funding Boosts
Movano Health, a company specializing in wearable technology for women’s health, has made significant strides with its Evie Med Ring, a wearable pulse oximeter. The company recently submitted updated clinical trial results to the FDA as part of its 510(k) filing, showing that the device meets and exceeds FDA guidelines for measuring blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) across all skin tones. This positions the Evie Med Ring for potential FDA clearance as a medical-grade biometric monitor. Additionally, Movano Health has secured $24 million in investment funding, including a strategic seed investment from a leading medical device company, to further develop and potentially expand the use of the Evie Med Ring in healthcare applications.
Regina Police Use Biometric Monitoring to Enhance Detainee Safety
The Regina Police Service (RPS) has implemented a biometric monitoring system in its detention facility, a pioneering move in Saskatchewan and one of the first in Canada. The system tracks detainees’ heart rates and respiratory rates in real-time, alerting officers to signs of medical distress with the aim of reducing fatalities and ensuring timely medical interventions. The initiative was prompted by the death of a detainee in August 2023, leading to an overhaul of care practices. It follows a similar move by the Thunder Bay Police Service, which launched the “CustodyProtect” pilot in collaboration with 4Sight Labs.
Judge Dismisses Biometrics Lawsuit Against Madison Square Gardens
A New York court dismissed a lawsuit against Madison Square Garden Entertainment (MSG) concerning its use of facial recognition to ban lawyers involved in litigation against it. The suit alleged a violation of the city’s Biometric Identifier Information Code, which prohibits profiting from biometric data. However, Judge Lewis Kaplan ruled that MSG’s use did not constitute direct profit from the data. He clarified that the law does not prevent indirect benefits from biometric data, allowing MSG to continue its practices under the guise of enhancing venue security. This case highlights the complex legal landscape around private businesses’ use of biometric technology.
‘They Could Get Ahead of Us’: Schumer Plans AI Framework in Race Against China
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has announced an initiative to introduce a legislative framework addressing the risks and benefits of artificial intelligence, aiming to prevent the U.S. from falling behind global competitors like China in AI advancements. Schumer discussed the need for urgent regulation to tackle issues including intellectual property, labor impacts, healthcare, and potential misuse scenarios like election interference and cyber-attacks during an AI summit in Washington. His approach advocates for a piecemeal legislative strategy, enabling individual congressional committees to advance their parts of the regulation independently, rather than waiting for a comprehensive plan.
ITL Boasts of Highest Accuracy in Age Estimation After ACCS Study
Innovative Technology Ltd. (ITL) has successfully renewed its certification from the Age Check Certification Scheme (ACCS) with its ICU Lite biometric age verification technology, demonstrating marked improvements since its last evaluation in 2021. The ICU Lite system is tailored for controlling access to age-restricted products and venues within the retail and gaming industries. ACCS, backed by the UKAS-accredited status, ensures that certified systems like ICU Lite meet stringent standards for accurately verifying age and identity, thereby helping to safeguard minors. ITL’s technology now features a Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of less than one year.
