Worldcoin’s Biometric Verification Program Expands to Ecuador
Worldcoin is expanding its World ID orb verification service to Ecuador, launching in Guayaquil on June 26 and Quito on June 27. Ecuador joins other Latin American countries, including Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru, in offering this biometric verification service. The expansion is part of Worldcoin’s broader regional strategy, which includes significant investments in Argentina to establish it as a regional hub with 50 verification locations across 10 cities. The launch in Ecuador reflects strong local support for technology-based solutions to distinguish humans from bots, with 92 percent of Ecuadorians backing such technologies.
Fraud Allegations Imperil Congo’s Biometric ID Project
The Democratic Republic of Congo’s biometric ID project is facing serious challenges due to fraud allegations. The project aims to establish a national biometric identification system to enhance security and streamline public services, but has been marred by accusations of corruption and mismanagement. Critics argue that the process for awarding contracts was not transparent, and there have been reports of inflated costs and kickbacks. These issues threaten to undermine the project’s credibility and delay its implementation, potentially impacting millions of Congolese citizens who rely on the new system for access to essential services. The government has promised to investigate the allegations thoroughly, but the controversy continues to cast a shadow over the initiative.
Maryland Digital IDs Come to Samsung Wallet, Enabling Airport Use
The Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration (MDOT MVA) has introduced the Maryland Mobile ID in Samsung Wallet, enabling secure identity verification at select airport security screenings. Maryland is now the second U.S. state to offer digital IDs in Samsung Wallet, complementing existing digital ID options in Apple Wallet and Google Wallet. Over 200,000 Maryland residents have already added their driver’s license or state ID to their mobile wallets since the service’s 2022 launch. The Samsung Wallet integration allows IDs to be used at TSA PreCheck checkpoints, including Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.
DHS Audit Reveals Gaps in Biometric Screening of Asylum Seekers and Noncitizens
A recent audit by the Office of Inspector General (OIG) has exposed critical gaps in the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) use of biometric technology for screening and vetting asylum seekers and noncitizens. Despite advancements like CBP’s Simplified Arrival and Unified Secondary systems, the audit highlights significant challenges, including limited access to the Department of Defense’s Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS), which hampers comprehensive screenings. The audit also revealed inconsistent biometric inspection practices at land ports of entry and a reliance on manual document checks, reducing screening accuracy. Furthermore, USCIS has neglected regular interim biometric screenings for over 400,000 pending asylum applicants, increasing security risks. The OIG recommends enhancing data sharing, standardizing inspection practices, and automating security checks, with DHS agreeing to address these issues.
Fiji Plans National Digital ID Program
The Fijian government is advancing plans for a national digital ID program, aiming to streamline identity verification for businesses. Announced after a recent Cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka stated that a “national ID card steering committee” will be set up to manage the program’s legal, policy, and governance frameworks. The first phase includes the introduction of electronic Know Your Customer (eKYC) by the Reserve Bank of Fiji. The initiative follows the government’s announcement of a National Digital Strategy, to be developed in partnership with the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). The strategy will leverage GovStack, an open-source digital government infrastructure platform supported by the ITU, Estonia, and the Digital Impact Alliance, which could potentially integrate biometric technologies for citizen identification and authentication.
New Research Details More Accurate Approach to Facial Emotion Recognition
A new research paper titled “Image-based facial emotion recognition using convolutional neural network on Emognition dataset” presents an enhanced approach to facial emotion recognition (FER) using deep learning models. The researchers aimed to improve upon existing FER systems, which typically recognize only basic emotions, by utilizing the Emognition dataset that includes ten emotions: amusement, awe, enthusiasm, liking, surprise, anger, disgust, fear, sadness, and neutral. The study employed two primary approaches: transfer learning with fine-tuned pre-trained models (Inception-V3 and MobileNet-V2) and a custom-built CNN model using the Taguchi method for hyperparameter optimization. The Inception-V3 model achieved the highest performance with a 96 percent accuracy rate and an average F1-score of 0.95, indicating superior performance in recognizing a broad range of emotions.
