Identity Digital Launches DNSid to Provide Verifiable Identity for AI Agents

Identity Digital has launched DNSid, a DNS-anchored identifier designed to bind AI agents to verifiable ownership, providing what the company describes as a persistent accountability layer for autonomous software systems operating across enterprise environments.

The product is the first release from Identity Digital’s new Innovation Labs division, which focuses on solving identity fragmentation in the AI agent economy. DNSid leverages existing domain name system (DNS) infrastructure, public key infrastructure (PKI), and blockchain technology to create a globally unique, durable identifier for each AI agent that persists across platforms and over time.

“AI agents have moved from experimentation to production almost overnight,” said Akram Atallah, CEO of Identity Digital. “Agents are already acting unpredictably, sometimes in error, sometimes in ways that create real risk. DNSid delivers the missing ownership and accountability layer that an AI-driven economy urgently requires.”

Each DNSid identifier is designed to be neutral and not controlled by any single vendor, independently verifiable in any environment, globally unique through established DNS governance, and durable across the full lifecycle of an agent. The system maintains the authoritative record of an agent’s identifier, ownership, transfer, and revocation status but does not handle runtime authentication or policy enforcement, which remain the responsibility of identity and security systems layered above it.

The launch addresses a growing concern in enterprise AI deployment. According to research from SailPoint cited in the announcement, one in five organisations has already experienced an AI agent-related security incident, and 97 percent of those lacked proper AI access controls. Separately, KPMG research found that 75 percent of businesses say security, compliance, and auditability are the most critical requirements for agent deployment.

Daniela Barbosa, general manager of decentralized technologies at the Linux Foundation, said Innovation Labs is launching with a standards-based approach and participating in the LF Decentralized Trust community. Identity Digital, headquartered in Bellevue, Washington, governs and operates the world’s largest portfolio of top-level domains, supporting over 28 million domains. The company argues that DNS provides a natural foundation for agent identity because it already serves as the internet’s universal coordination layer, relied upon by every enterprise, cloud provider, and digital service. DNSid is available through the Innovation Labs website at DNSid.ai.
