IDEMIA went home a winner at the SIA New Product Showcase Awards, which were presented during a virtual ceremony on July 9. The company took the top prize in the Biometrics category with its new VisionPass facial recognition terminal.
According to IDEMIA, VisionPass is designed to do for facial recognition what the company’s MorphoWave scanner does for fingerprints. In that regard, VisionPass was built to facilitate contactless access control, through several rounds of consultation with partners to find out what kinds of features they would find most useful in a facial recognition solution.
The resulting VisionPass terminal comes with 2D, 3D, and infrared cameras, all of which are backed with an algorithm that can recognize as many as 30 people every minute. The system will automatically adjust itself to account for different angles and people of different sizes, and can function in adverse lighting conditions like direct or heavy darkness. IDEMIA also addressed the racial bias that is present in many facial recognition systems, indicating that VisionPass can identify people of any skin tone.
VisionPass offers liveness detention to prevent spoofing, and can field up to 40,000 individual users.
“The terminal was necessary to meet needs expressed by our customers: speed, accuracy, reliability and a true frictionless user experience,” explained IDEMIA Biometrics and Automotive EVP Yves Portalier.
“SIA congratulates IDEMIA on being selected as the winner of the Biometrics category award in SIA’s 2020 New Product Showcase,” added SIA CEO Don Erickson. “It is this kind of continuous innovation that brings the security industry forward and contributes to the safety of our world.”
VisionPass builds on the success of the MorphoWave Compact scanner, which garnered a similar award back in 2018. IDEMIA has since installed the MorphoWave at its new office in Tokyo, and at the nearby Digital Garage. The company says that VisionPass has drawn considerable interest since it debuted last May.
