“…IDEMIA suggested that the biometric national ID cards ‘will accelerate rollout of Morocco’s online services and will ramp up development of the digital economy.'”
IDEMIA has won a contract to provide the Moroccan government with new biometric ID cards for citizens. The deal was signed with the country’s Direction Générale de la Sûreté Nationale, or “National Security Government Department” (“DGSN”).
The aim is to let Moroccan citizens securely access online e-government services as well as private services providers via a digital national ID system. This national ID program is still taking shape, but in announcing its new contract, IDEMIA suggested that the biometric national ID cards “will accelerate rollout of Morocco’s online services and will ramp up development of the digital economy.”
Elaborating further, IDEMIA Public Security & Identity VP Philippe Barreau explained that “e-government services will only come about if people’s physical and digital identity is fully reliable and safeguarded,” adding, “Biometric technology nowadays delivers watertight security and flexibility as expected.”
IDEMIA is renowned for its expertise in both biometrics and document security, with the company having recently worked with INTERPOL to offer training services to help border officials better understand the sophisticated security technologies used in modern travel documents, and to spot potentially fraudulent documents. Moroccan authorities, meanwhile, have shown a growing interest in biometric identification technologies in recent years, having deployed such technologies for border security in an earlier government project.
