IDEMIA has released a new biometric tablet with face and fingerprint recognition capabilities. The device has been dubbed the ID Screen, and it is being marketed towards public and private organizations that need to register and verify people’s identities while in the field.
The ID Screen has a compact 8-inch (1280 x 800) color touchscreen, with a lightweight portrait form factor. Fingerprint authentication is delivered using IDEMIA’s CMB E3 optical fingerprint sensor, while facial recognition relies on the device’s 8MP rear camera. That camera can also be used for document recognition and MRZ scanning purposes.
The tablet itself has contact and contactless smart card readers that can be used to check electronic passports and electronic IDs. The Android 10 device is built with a 2GHZ Quadcore processor, and offers 3G, 4G, Wifi and Bluetooth connectivity.
“With ID Screen, IDEMIA is offering the combination of the best biometric technologies embedded into a mobile tablet,” said IDEMIA Biometric Devices and Automotive Business EVP Yves Portalier. “It provides a convenient and smart way to deploy digital services to multiple categories of users in a wide variety of places.”
According to IDEMIA, the ID Screen can be used for a number of different applications, including elections, onboarding, and access control.
The new tablet debuts shortly after IDEMIA and Sopra Steria secured a biometric border contract with the European Union. The company has also been pushing its MorphoWave Compact fingerprint scanner as the demand for contactless solutions has increased during the COVID-19 pandemic.
