IDEX Biometrics and IDEMIA have officially unveiled a new biometric payment card. The two companies had previously announced that they would be conducting a biometric card pilot in the latter half of 2020, ahead of an anticipated commercial launch sometime in 2021.
The latest news indicates that the two companies have been able to stick to that original schedule. The card itself will allow users to authorize payments with fingerprint recognition, and features the new TrustedBio sensor from IDEX Biometrics. According to IDEX, the IDEMIA offering is its most efficient card integration thus far, and will deliver an extremely high level of biometric performance.
“We are excited to see our customer and partner begin to market cards based on our third generation sensor family, TrustedBio,” said IDEX CEO Vince Graziani. “This product represents a major milestone for both partners and raises the bar for efficient biometric card architecture.”
IDEMIA licensed IDEX’s fingerprint enrollment solution back in 2019, while the companies themselves have been collaborating on biometric payment cards since 2016. IDEX’s TrustedBio sensor, meanwhile, was built to reduce smart card manufacturing costs, and finally went into mass production in March. The sensor was integrated into the Zwipe Pay ONE platform after Zwipe participated in the card pilot with IDEX and IDEMIA.
