“This trial harnesses contactless biometric technology that gives users an unrivaled airport experience without letting up one jot on security.” – Philippe Barreau Executive Vice President, Identity and Public Safety, IDEMIA
IDEMIA is teaming up with Resa Airport Data Systems (“RESA”) on a biometric boarding system for the Lyon Saint-Exupéry airport, the company has announced.
The system will revolve around selfie-based identity verification. Using Lyon Airports’ mobile app, “Mona”, travelers will be able to register ahead of their flight by uploading a face image and pictures of their identity document and boarding pass. Facial recognition is used to match the selfie to the ID, and to link this biometric identity to the boarding pass.
From there, the traveler will be able to pass through RESA’s “Major e-Gate” at the airport without the need to present identity documents or even a boarding pass, with the e-gate’s integrated camera scanning the traveler’s face and matching it against the identity registered through the Mona app.
The companies have been contracted to develop the system by Vinci Airports, the operator of Lyon Airport. The group is planning to conduct a one-year trial starting October 15, exclusively for Transavia and TAP flights from Lyon to Portugal.
“Current COVID restrictions forced us to rethink how to take care of passengers and their interactions with airport security staff and equipment,” explained RESA CEO Renaud Willard, adding that the joint solution lets passengers “pass through airport checks fully contactless and without handing over paper documents while shoring up security to boot.”
“This trial harnesses contactless biometric technology that gives users an unrivaled airport experience without letting up one jot on security,” added IDEMIA Identity and Public Safety EVP Philippe Barreau.
With biometric passenger screening having been on the ascent in recent years, the new project reflects its acceleration due to COVID-19, particularly with respect to contactless solutions.
