IDEMIA Teams with LG Suppliers on 3D Facial Recognition

Seeking to get ahead of the rising trend of 3D facial recognition, IDEMIA has announced a new partnership with Infineon and Pmdtechnologies to develop a refined solution for OEMs and systems integrators.

IDEMIA is no stranger to 3D facial recognition technology, having announced software designed for infrared cameras last September. But in a new statement, the company has explained that its collaboration will combine the “latest hardware from Infineon and pmdtechnologies and cutting-edge 3D Face biometric software from IDEMIA” to offer an enhanced solution aimed at smartphone, tablet, and PC applications as well as applications in new areas such as smart cars.

IDEMIA’s new partners are the developers of a 3D image sensor based on Time-of-Flight (ToF) technology, which essentially revolves around the analysis of how emitted light bounces off of objects in the real world. Emphasizing their high profile, Infineon and pmdtechnologies’ ToF tech is being used to enable 3D facial recognition in LG’s newest smartphone, to be showcased at this year’s Mobile World Congress.

The new partnership arrives immediately after IDEMIA’s announcement of a corporate restructuring that combines multiple independent business divisions, including those concerned with security and biometric solutions, into a single new Secure Enterprise Transactions division.
