IDEMIA to Join Smart Physical Access Control Alliance

Security and identity solutions company IDEMIA has announced that its Biometric Terminals division is preparing to join the recently formed Smart Physical Access Control (SPAC) alliance.

SPAC was launched in 2020 as a response to changes in a number of regulatory frameworks including the French Military Programming Act (Loi de Programmation Militaire en France), Europe’s GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation), and the European Cybersecurity Act, in which technology companies that combat cybercrime are now classified as “operators of vital importance”.

The alliance aims to help promote French and European expertise on end-to-end physical access control security by keeping its members constantly updated with these ever-changing cybersecurity policies.

IDEMIA joins a number of other French access control firms that are already members of SPAC, including Safe Cluster and ANSSI, and aims to lend its expertise as one of the world’s leaders in biometric terminal and kiosk production and biometrics research and development.

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic hasn’t seemed to slow IDEMIA down, as the company recently announced a new contract with the French Ministry of the Interior — in partnership with Sopra Steria — that will see it deploy its biometric traveller processing tech throughout France’s borders.

That news follows another announcement just last week that a partnership with Orbis Diagnostics will see the French company work on a rapid testing solution that will help confirm an individual’s COVID-19 immunity status.
