IDEMIA, HYPR, and Wavelynx have jointly announced a new converged access card for both physical and network access control in the enterprise.
The card features a FIPS-certified PIV applet, meaning a component on the card adheres to the Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) for Personal Identity Verification (PIV). This certification ensures that the applet meets certain security and interoperability standards set by the federal government.
The card also has a FIDO Certified passkey with MIFARE DESFire support, meaning the card adheres to the Fast IDentity Online (FIDO) standards focused on providing secure, easy-to-use authentication. MIFARE DESFire support indicates compatibility with a widely-used standard for contactless smart cards, enhancing the card’s versatility in access control scenarios. Together, these certifications suggest that the card can be used securely and seamlessly across a range of modern access control systems
That having been said, the card also has a Prox interface, allowing it to work with legacy access control readers. When a card with a Prox interface is brought near a reader, the reader can wirelessly communicate with the card to verify the user’s credentials and grant or deny access.
While IDEMIA and HYPR are well known for their expertise in biometrics and other sophisticated identity technology, WaveLynx provides an access control platform that is customizable and designed for flexibility, enabling businesses to upgrade their systems on a schedule that suits them. Established in 2013, the company emphasizes simplicity and flexibility, aiding in the integration of a range of technologies from legacy systems to future advancements.
The company’s joint announcement comes ahead of the Authenticate 2023 Conference, where IDEMIA Identity and Security North America VP Teresa Wu and HYPR Field CTO Ryan Rowcliffe will lead a session titled “How to make your ID badge smarter” on October 17.
