IDEMIA is conducting another enrollment drive to get more people to register for the Transportation Security Administration’s PreCheck screening program. The latest push will take place at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF) in Louisville, Kentucky, where IDEMIA agents will be operating enrollment carts for passengers looking to speed up their travel journey.
The carts at SDF will be located in the pre-security area. As a result, passengers will be able to register when they get to the airport, and enjoy the benefits of expedited screening on that same day. That distinguishes the Kentucky deployment from a March enrollment drive in Mississippi, where passengers still needed to go through the regular screening line on the day of their on-site registration.
The fact that passengers can register and fly as PreCheck members on the same day will presumably help boost registration, since signing up will immediately and directly translate to a more streamlined travel experience. However, most registrants will not receive their official Known Traveler Number until three to five days later. The Louisville drive will run from May 5-16, and is timed to coincide with the annual running of the Kentucky Derby.
Passengers who encounter one of the IDEMIA carts do not need to make an appointment, while the actual enrollment process can be completed in as little as five minutes. The PreCheck program is part of a broader TSA digital transformation initiative, and uses fingerprint recognition to verify the identities of approved travelers to allow them to pass through security without removing their shoes and belts (and without taking anything out of their bags) once their prints have been confirmed.
According to the TSA, 94 percent of those registered in the PreCheck program made it through security in less than five minutes in the month of March. More than 12 million people had registered for PreCheck status as of October of 2021.
