IDEMIA Public Security North America has brought Iowa’s mobile ID to the Samsung Wallet, extending the digital ID’s availability to a greater number of potential users.
The company first revealed its work on a mobile ID app for the state back in 2021, when it announced that a prototype was confirmed to have met the required ISO/IEC DIS 18013-5 standards for mobile driver’s licenses. UL, an independent auditor, tested the app using test data from an Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) provisioning system.
The official launch of a mobile ID developed by IDEMIA in collaboration with the Iowa DOT would come later, in October of 2023. Just weeks after that, in December of 2023, IDEMIA revealed its first collaboration with Samsung, to bring an Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division (AZ MVD) digital ID to the Samsung Wallet.
Now, IDEMIA is building on that successful relationship with Samsung to enable Iowans with Samsung devices to present mobile IDs as official identity documents at the Des Moines and Eastern Iowa airports, as well as 25 other airports across the US.
“Travelers who want to take advantage of this new capability will find that their Iowa mobile ID is a convenient option when going through the security process,” commented TSA Iowa Federal Security Director John Bright. “TSA will continue to embrace technology that improves security effectiveness while streamlining the passenger experience at airports.”
First launched in 2013, the Samsung Wallet initially allowed users to store membership cards, coupons, and tickets. In 2015, Samsung enhanced its functionality by integrating Samsung Pay, enabling users to make secure payments via Near Field Communication (NFC) and Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST) technology.
Samsung Wallet has since expanded to include support for digital keys, identification cards, and cryptocurrency management. The company has sought to keep pace with the expanding functionality of rival digital wallets from the likes of Apple and Google.
IDEMIA says its technology is now supporting digital IDs across six states, with Arizona and Iowa being among the first to support the Samsung Wallet.
