The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office in Florida has become the first law enforcement agency in the United States to implement IDEMIA’s STORM ABIS, a cloud-native Automated Biometric Identification System.
STORM ABIS, designed with input from latent print examiners, is a cloud-native Automated Biometric Identification System designed specifically for law enforcement agencies. It streamlines the process of fingerprint identification by providing a single platform to search and compare fingerprints against county, state, and federal databases.
The system’s cloud-based architecture allows for secure access from anywhere via a web browser, eliminating the need for dedicated hardware or software installation. STORM ABIS incorporates advanced biometric matching algorithms and integrates with existing fingerprint databases, making it a potentially valuable tool for law enforcement agencies seeking to enhance their investigative capabilities.
The implementation of STORM ABIS has reportedly improved efficiency and increased the number of cases processed per week for the Volusia Sheriff’s Office Latent Print Unit, which handles casework for several agencies.
“The ease of use stands out for us,” said Lindsay Jones, CLPE, Supervisor of the Latent Print Unit. “We prepare the images for a case, upload it to STORM ABIS, and then run searches for the case.” Jones added that the system has allowed her team to move from handling five case per week to as many as 15.
On the partnership with IDEMIA, Jones commented that “the IDEMIA team has been with us every step of the way, and we’ve loved working with them. The team is knowledgeable and transparent about what we can do with their technology, we’re looking forward to continuing to collaborate with them in the future.”
