“The biometric screening technology was deployed at LAX’s new West Gates in the Tom Bradley International Terminal.”
IDEMIA‘s facial recognition technology is being used at new passenger screening gates in the Los Angeles International Airport, the company has announced.
In this case, IDEMIA played the role of a subcontractor under EASIER, a provider of passenger self-service solutions for airports that won the overarching contract from Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA). The biometric screening technology was deployed at LAX’s new West Gates in the Tom Bradley International Terminal.
That same terminal was the site of US Customs and Border Protection’s first ‘Simplified Arrival’ deployment at the airport last autumn. Simplified Arrival is the CBP’s face-based security screening program, designed to match travelers to their passport photos and to images held in Department of Homeland Security databases. The CBP has been working to dramatically extend Simplified Arrival’s coverage across the country in recent years.
“With IDEMIA’s advanced facial recognition technology, which was ranked #1 in the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST) latest Face Recognition Vendor Test (FRVT), airports will be equipped to deliver the best-in-class passenger experience utilizing our accurate and responsible system,” said IDEMIA North America’s Travel and Transport VP, Lisa Sullivan.
For EASIER’s part, Managing Director Ludovic Libeski gestured toward the health benefits of contactless biometric passenger screening in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and attendant concerns about face-to-face interaction and touching shared surfaces. “Faced with an unprecedented health crisis, EASIER teams and our partner IDEMIA mobilized to ensure a large-scale deployment of solutions at the largest Origin & Destination airport in the United States and to improve the passenger experience,” he said.
IDEMIA’s announcement comes soon after the news that LAX authorities had completed a $477.5 million expansion to Terminal 1, which also features biometric self-service kiosks provided by Materna Intelligent Passenger Solutions.
