Lenovo has launched a bunch of new Windows 10 laptops. The Ideapads, comprising the company’s 300, 300s, 500, and 500s series, range widely in technological sophistication and price.
As The Verge notes, the array of devices is a little bewildering, with the 300 series laptops marketed as “light and portable machines” and the 500 series devices being the more heavy-duty offerings – though the 300s and 500s versions of the lineup confuse matters further as even lighter and less flashy (graphically speaking) machines. But there is a standout feature on the 500 series: the inclusion of an Intel RealSense 3D camera, which enables the use of Windows Hello biometric authentication. It allows for user authentication via facial recognition, facilitating both greater convenience and security; users could unlock their devices just by looking at them.
The Windows Hello compatibility could be a sign of things to come as more third party companies take advantage of Windows Hello’s biometric security features. If that does become a strong trend, it will offer the very positive benefits of raising consumer awareness about biometric security while also helping such technology to proliferate, securing more devices and user data.
