FaceTec’s UR Code Protocol Aces Independent Security Review

FaceTec’s UR Code protocol has passed a full security audit by Praetorian Security with zero vulnerabilities detected across all risk categories. The review validated the SDK’s encryption, hashing, and obfuscation techniques, supporting FaceTec’s claims that UR Codes are secure-by-design. UR Codes enable offline, privacy-preserving identity verification by binding facial biometrics and legal identity data in digitally signed barcodes. Recent upgrades include Scan+Match apps, UR Encoder tools for issuers, and cryptographic enhancements extending validity through 2035.

VA Seeks Vendors for Biometric Authentication Proof-of-Concept

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has issued an RFI seeking vendors for a biometric authentication proof-of-concept, focusing on facial and iris recognition for secure identity verification. The initiative targets both physical and logical access control within VA facilities, with an emphasis on single-tenant cloud deployments and scalability. Vendors must detail experience, provide cost estimates, and assess feasibility of a 12-month timeline. Responses are due by May 23, 2025, and will inform potential future contracts aimed at strengthening the VA’s identity management systems.

Apple Testing Under-Display Face ID for 2025 iPhone 18 Pro Models

Apple is reportedly testing under-display Face ID for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, aiming to eliminate the notch by embedding facial recognition hardware beneath the screen. The system may also include ambient light and proximity sensors, though challenges remain around maintaining performance through OLED panels. The feature aligns with Apple’s ongoing patent activity and industry trends favoring invisible biometric hardware, but remains in early testing with no confirmed production timeline.

India Launches Nationwide Rollout of Chip-Based E-Passports to Boost Security

India has begun a nationwide rollout of chip-based electronic passports following a successful pilot in 12 cities. The ICAO-compliant e-passports include an embedded RFID chip storing encrypted biometric and personal data, protected by PKI and EAC protocols. Developed by the Ministry of External Affairs, India Security Press, NIC, and IIT Kanpur, the rollout aims to enhance passport security, reduce fraud, and enable faster border processing. Full implementation is expected by the end of 2025 as infrastructure and training scale across the country.

Uganda Launches Mass Digital ID Renewal Campaign Ahead of 2026 Elections

Uganda’s NIRA has launched a national campaign to renew 15.8 million ID cards and register 17.2 million new individuals ahead of the 2026 elections, starting with a pilot phase in May 2025. Supported by upgraded biometric kits and iris recognition, the effort includes online pre-registration, high-speed card printers, and over 13,000 recruits. Aligned with MOSIP and Uganda’s Unified Payments Interface, the initiative supports broader digital transformation goals while addressing past issues with data accuracy and access.

Social Security Cards Going Digital in 2025 as SSA Modernizes Access System

The Social Security Administration will soon allow users to access their Social Security numbers digitally through verified my Social Security accounts, starting summer 2025. The feature, accessible via mobile and desktop, aims to reduce dependence on physical cards and follows the agency’s move to Login.gov authentication. While not replacing physical cards, the digital access tool is part of SSA’s broader modernization and cybersecurity initiative, aligning with global trends in secure digital credentialing.
