Welcome to ID Tech’s digest of identity industry news. Here’s what you need to know about the world of digital identity and biometrics today:

Trump Orders Voter ID Overhaul, Cites India’s Biometric System as Model
U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order mandating substantial changes to election procedures, requiring documented proof of citizenship for voter registration, and discontinuing acceptance of absentee ballots received after Election Day. The order cites India and Brazil as examples of countries that have outpaced America in establishing modern digital citizen ID infrastructure.. Critics argue the order could disenfranchise millions without easy access to citizenship documents, especially minorities, the elderly, and low-income voters. Republican supporters welcome it as enhancing election integrity. Legal challenges are anticipated, questioning the executive’s constitutional authority to impose election regulations traditionally managed by states.
Mastercard and NEC Expand Biometric Payments Across Asia Pacific Region
Mastercard is expanding its Biometric Checkout Programme in the Asia Pacific region through a partnership with NEC Corporation, aiming to replace traditional checkout methods with biometric authentication solutions. The collaboration, building on a 2023 agreement, supports Mastercard’s goal to eliminate passwords by 2030, leveraging NEC’s advanced biometric technology, including the globally deployed NeoFace facial recognition system. NEC’s FIDO2-compliant platform will underpin the deployment, expected to accelerate biometric payment adoption across the rapidly growing APAC market.
Brazilian ID App FacePass Leaks 1.6M Files in Major Biometric Data Breach
A major data breach at Brazilian identification app FacePass has exposed over 1.6 million sensitive files, including Brazilian national IDs, verification selfies, CPF numbers, phone numbers, and AWS system credentials. The breach occurred via an unsecured AWS S3 bucket, posing significant risks of identity theft, financial fraud, and biometric spoofing attacks. Although FacePass reportedly secured the vulnerability following notification, the company has not yet officially commented on the breach.
Brazil Upholds Ban on Worldcoin’s Biometric Data-for-Crypto Program
Brazil’s National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) has upheld its ban on cryptocurrency incentives linked to the World ID biometric verification project, rejecting an appeal by Tools For Humanity. The decision continues a suspension initiated in January 2025 over concerns that crypto-based rewards compromise genuine consent required by Brazilian data protection laws for sensitive biometric data collection. The ANPD will impose daily fines if data collection resumes, challenging World ID’s regional expansion strategy in Latin America despite recent growth in Argentina and Panama.
