ID Tech Digest – January 30, 2026

Welcome to ID Tech’s digest of identity industry news. Here’s what you need to know about the world of digital identity and biometrics today:

Germany Launches EUDI Wallet Sandbox for Testing Functions and Use Cases

Germany’s Federal Ministry for Digital and State Modernization and the Federal Agency for Disruptive Innovation have launched a sandbox environment for the European Digital Identity Wallet, allowing companies and public administrations to test wallet functions ahead of public rollout. The platform initially supports person identification data, with electronic attribute attestations planned for a second phase, and is tied to Germany’s target EUDI Wallet go-live date of January 2, 2027. The sandbox is intended to operationalize PID-based digital identity ahead of mandatory wallet availability under the EU’s updated eIDAS framework.

DHS Publishes RIVR Selfie-to-ID Verification Results; Paravision Cites Top Performance

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has released results from the Remote Identity Validation Rally Selfie Match to Document track, benchmarking selfie-to-ID facial recognition performance across 16 anonymized vendor systems. The testing evaluated false match rates, false non-match rates, and extraction failures using data from 1,632 volunteers and multiple state IDs. Paravision identified its system as the only one to meet all DHS performance goals, including the look-alike imposter false match rate target, in results published by the Maryland Test Facility.

North Sea Port Launches Biometric Port Pass Platform With Peripass

North Sea Port has launched Port Pass, a biometric-enabled digital access platform developed with Peripass to replace physical port passes for ISPS-regulated areas. The system uses smartphone-based registration, biometric identity checks, and real-time screening against port ban databases, and is being piloted across seven port community customers with a broader rollout planned by the end of March 2026. The deployment reflects growing use of biometric identity systems across European ports as logistics hubs modernize access control and security infrastructure.

Ottawa Says No Mandatory National Digital ID Is Planned

The Government of Canada has stated it is not implementing a mandatory national digital identification credential, according to a written response to Conservative MP Marilyn Gladu. Ottawa emphasized a voluntary, service-specific approach built around shared digital credential infrastructure such as GC Issue and Verify and a modernized GC Sign-In, with participation left to individual programs and users. The response underscores that digital credentials remain optional and consent-based, amid broader experimentation across federal and provincial identity ecosystems.

Google Expands Android Identity Check and Tightens Theft Protection Controls

Google is rolling out expanded Android theft-protection measures that extend Identity Check to all apps using the Android Biometric Prompt, including third-party banking and password manager apps. The updates also introduce new controls for Failed Authentication Lock, longer lockout periods after repeated PIN or pattern guesses, and added safeguards for Remote Lock recovery. In Brazil, Google will enable Theft Detection Lock and Remote Lock by default on new Android devices, reflecting a push toward stronger out-of-the-box protections in high-risk markets.

CBUAE Pilots Biometric Payments With PopID and Network International

The Central Bank of the UAE has launched a biometric payments proof-of-concept at the Dubai Land Department, allowing customers to authorize transactions using facial recognition or palm scans. The pilot is being run through the central bank’s sandbox and innovation programs, with Network International supporting the payments workflow and PopID providing the biometric authentication layer. Officials framed the initiative as supervised testing aligned with the UAE Digital Economy Strategy, with no timeline announced for broader deployment.

ZKTeco USA and Armatura Earn OSDP Verified Badges as SIA Revamps Its Subcommittee

ZKTeco USA and Armatura have added multiple access control products to the Security Industry Association’s OSDP Verified list, as SIA named new leadership for its OSDP Technical Subcommittee. The update highlights continued migration away from legacy reader protocols toward encrypted, bi-directional OSDP Secure Channel communications. SIA emphasized that OSDP Verified confirms protocol conformance rather than serving as a blanket certification of all device security features.

Unique Identification Authority of India Reshapes Aadhaar App and Links Wallets

India’s Unique Identification Authority has rolled out a redesigned Aadhaar mobile app that emphasizes consent, granular data sharing, and user visibility into authentication activity. The update allows one device to manage up to five Aadhaar profiles, supports offline QR-based verification, and introduces tighter controls for biometric locking and transaction logs. UIDAI also announced integrations with Google Wallet, Samsung Wallet, and DigiLocker, enabling citizens to store Aadhaar credentials in consumer wallets using ISO 18013-5 and W3C standards.
