Germany’s Federal Ministry for Digital and State Modernization and the Federal Agency for Disruptive Innovation have launched a sandbox environment for the European Digital Identity Wallet, enabling companies and public administrations to test wallet functions and use cases ahead of public rollout.
The testing platform, which builds on Germany’s EUDI Wallet project led by SPRIND, allows participants to test person identification data functionality first, with electronic attestations of attributes to follow in a second phase. Monthly cohorts began in December 2025, according to information published by Bitkom.
The sandbox gives relying parties a venue to test PID and attribute credentials before the EUDI Wallet’s planned public launch. Bitkom’s memorandum of understanding page indicates Germany is targeting a go-live date of January 2, 2027.
The initiative aligns with fresh funding for the EUDI Wallet rollout announced by the European Commission to accelerate deployment across member states. Testing environments like Germany’s are intended to operationalize the wallet ecosystem by giving companies and government agencies hands-on experience with PID-based digital identification before wider rollout.
Germany’s sandbox follows the establishment of the EU’s Digital ID Working Group, which is advancing governance frameworks for wallet implementations across Europe.
The EUDI Wallet is part of the European Union’s updated eIDAS regulation, which requires member states to offer citizens a digital identity wallet by 2026. Germany’s testing environment is among the most developed national initiatives to prepare infrastructure and use cases for the wallet’s deployment.
