SITA has acquired Milan-based airport design firm CCM to enhance its ability to integrate advanced technology with innovative terminal design. CCM, which has redesigned over 300 airports globally, will retain operational independence while leveraging SITA’s tech capabilities in areas like biometrics and self-service. The move aligns with growing airport investment in IT and self-service infrastructure, as highlighted in SITA’s recent industry report. The acquisition supports SITA’s broader strategy of optimizing airport spaces to improve passenger flow and operational efficiency.

Armenia Partners with IDEMIA to Launch Biometric Passports by 2026

A French consortium led by IDEMIA Smart Identity and A.C.I. Technology has been awarded a contract by Armenia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs to produce biometric passports and ID cards starting in the second half of 2026. The project, part of a public-private partnership, will modernize Armenia’s national ID system with biometrics infrastructure, enhancing access to government services and border mobility. The move aligns with Armenia’s broader geopolitical shift toward the West, including steps toward EU membership and a recent strategic pact with the U.S.

Greece Mandates Digital ID Numbers on New National Identity Cards

Greece has introduced a mandatory 12-digit personal identification number on all newly issued national ID cards, aiming to streamline citizen interactions with government services. The number will be printed on the card and embedded in its chip, with data managed by the General Secretariat for Information Systems and Digital Governance. Existing cards remain valid during a transition period. The initiative supports EU-wide digital identity goals and aligns with the shift toward the European Digital Identity (EUDI) wallet framework, consolidating identification processes across sectors.

Germany to Launch Digital Driver’s Licenses on Smartphones in April 2025

Germany is launching digital driver’s licenses this month, allowing citizens to store and present their credentials via a secure smartphone app integrated with the national digital ID system. Participation is voluntary, and physical licenses remain valid. The initiative supports the EU’s broader EUDI wallet framework and includes strong encryption and authentication to meet privacy standards. The rollout follows Germany’s recent digital government efforts, including the Deutsche Verwaltungscloud platform, and reflects a commitment to interoperable, privacy-conscious digital identity solutions across the EU.

T-Mobile to Pay $33M After SIM Swap Attack Led to Massive Crypto Theft

T-Mobile has been ordered to pay $33 million after a SIM swap attack enabled hackers to steal $38 million in cryptocurrency from tech entrepreneur Joseph “Josh” Jones in 2020. Despite enhanced account protections, attackers bypassed multi-factor authentication by transferring Jones’ number to a new SIM, revealing critical security lapses. The arbitration ruling, recently made public, underscores growing scrutiny of mobile carriers over SIM swapping vulnerabilities and reinforces calls for stronger identity protections in digital asset security.

Wink and Phoenix Networks Merge to Boost AI-Powered Biometric Payments

Wink has merged with Phoenix Managed Networks to combine its AI and biometric payment technologies with Phoenix’s global payment infrastructure, aiming to expand secure, omnichannel payment solutions. The merged entity will leverage Phoenix’s network of 220,000 merchants and PCI-certified systems to scale Wink’s pay-by-face, palm recognition, and fraud prevention tools. John McDonnell, formerly of Phoenix, will serve as Chairman and Chief Strategy Officer. The move targets growing demand for biometric payments and positions the new company to deliver AI-driven solutions across retail, transport, and other sectors.

Oura Ring Launches AI Health Assistant to Deliver Personalized Insights

Oura has launched Oura Advisor, an AI-powered feature that delivers personalized health insights based on biometric data from its smart rings. Available to Gen3 and Ring 4 users with English settings, the tool uses a large language model to offer tailored guidance through a conversational interface, analyzing trends in sleep, activity, and recovery. Users can choose between communication styles and check-in frequencies, with memory support for ongoing context. Beta testing showed high engagement and improved user understanding of health metrics. Additional language support is expected later in 2025.

UK Fuel Shop Deploys Facial Scanning to Control Alcohol Sales Access

Krisco Services Group has deployed facial biometric age verification at its Mellors Fuel Shop in Wantage, Oxfordshire, using Innovative Technology’s MyCheckr system to control access to alcohol. The camera-based system unlocks entry to the store’s “beer cave” only for customers who appear to be over 25, while alerting staff for manual ID checks when necessary. Designed to avoid storing personal data, the system supports GDPR compliance and generates refusal logs and reports for regulatory oversight. Krisco plans to expand use of the system to self-service tills following its initial success.
