Barska Biometrics has announced a new storage device in its lineup of products. The IBOX does away with the lock and key, and instead employs dual fingerprint scanners.
The secure storage solution offers 410 cubic inches of space, and each of its two its fingerprint scanners (the second on’e a backup) have a 500 DPI optical reader that kicks into action as soon as a finger is detected. Barska says that the IBOX can authenticate within merely one second, and is 99.9999 percent accurate. Moreover, the system can run for two years on four AA batteries.
There’s a lot of buzz these days about biometric technology’s applications in securing digital data online and via mobile devices, but the technology is also driving a major evolution in physical lock security, of which the IBOX is a great example. We’ve also seen biometric fingerprint locks appear on cabinet doors (especially for the physical protection of servers), used for physical access control purposes, and even to secure the contents of physical wallets and passports.
