Ideal Innovations, Inc. (I3), a forensics, biometrics, and technical services firm owned by service disabled veterans, has won a $4.97 million contract to help run and maintain a major biometric identification system in Afghanistan. The Space and Naval Warfare System Center Atlantic contact entails the support of the Program Executive Office Command, Control, Communications, Computers and Intelligence/Foreign Military Sales (PEO C4I/FMS) in offering maintenance and operations services for the Afghan Automated Biometrics Identification System (AABIS), a part of the Afghan National Biometrics program.
The contract will see I3 work to build the capacity of the Afghan Ministry of Interior Biometrics Center by helping to train staff, build IT systems, and provide upgrades and maintenance support for proprietary software. It’s an important role in the bigger picture for the war-torn country, involving collaboration with the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), NATO training forces, and Afghan government agencies. In a statement, I3 CEO Bob Kocher pointed out that the company has already collaborated extensively with the Afghan Ministry of Interior Biometric Center in previously contracted work, and asserted that his company’s staff “are proud to provide continued support” to the Center, adding that “3, along with our Afghan Government and Afghan teammates, have formed an effective partnership that has produced measurable results towards the safety and security of the Afghan people.”
I3 has a history of defense-related government partnerships elsewhere, as well. In 2013 the company won a major contract to assist the Biometric Support Center, an organization under the umbrella of the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Biometric Identity Management (OBIM).
