New HP Healthcare Computers Support Biometric Security, Wet Wipe Resistance

HP has announced a slate of new laptops designed specifically for the healthcare industry, and featuring biometric security.

The devices were announced at this year’s HIMSS, which is running this week in Las Vegas. The HP EliteBook 840 G5 Healthcare Edition Notebook is specifically designed to endure germicidal wipes, even while the machine is running. And like the HP EliteOne 800 G4 23.8 Healthcare Edition AiO, it features embedded support for single sign-on authentication via an RFID reader and a fingerprint sensor.

These represent merely the latest examples of HP’s interest in biometric authentication, which is not restricted to healthcare or even administrative environments; the company has brought biometric authentication systems to consumer devices in its HP Pavilion family as well, proving itself to be a significant driver of biometric integration in the computer and laptop space after the mobile biometrics revolution of the last few years.

Meanwhile, a third device, the HP Healthcare Edition HC270cr Clinical Review Display, supports SSO as well, but only via RFID. That device and the HP EliteOne 800 G4 23.8 Healthcare Edition All-in-One are expected to hit the market in June, while HP is aiming to bring its HP EliteBook 840 G5 Healthcare Edition Notebook to market in May.
