Biometrics Expert Named IEEE Fellow

Renowned biometrics researcher and scientist Stephanie Schuckers has been named an IEEE Fellow in recognition of “her contributions in biometric recognition systems.” Schuckers is a Professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering at Clarkson University and is the director of the Center for Identification Technology, a National Science Foundation Industry/University Cooperative Research Center. She delivered the opening session for FindBiometrics enterprise-focused Virtual Identity Summit last month.

AU10TIX Gets New CEO

Dan Yerushalmi has been named CEO of AU10TIX, replacing former chief executive Carey O’Connor Kolaja. Yerushalmi previously served as the Chief Client and Revenue Officer for Checkpoint Software Technologies. Among other professional achievements, he was named one of the 100 most influential CIOs by CIO Magazine in 2016. In a statement, AU10TIX Chairman Ron Atzmon thanked O’Connor for her contribution to the company, and enthused that Yerushalmi’s “experience and extensive knowledge in strategy, operations and sales make him the right person for the company as we expand activity and increase personnel globally.”

Fujitsu, Ingenico Unveil Biometric Payments Terminal

France-based payment technology specialist Ingenico has teamed up with Fujitsu Frontech North America subsidiary Fulcrum Biometrics on a biometric Point-of-Sale solution based on palm vein identification. The solution is based on Ingenico’s AXIUM range of Android payment terminals, and lets the end user confirm a payment by moving their hand over a near-infrared sensor, negating the need to present a payment card or any other physical hardware.

Token Wins BIG Innovation Award

New York-based startup Token has been named a 2023 BIG Innovation Award winner, in recognition of its wearable security key solution. The Token Ring is designed to deliver passwordless, multi-factor authentication through gesture recognition and NFC technology. “Over just the last nine months, the Token smart ring has been recognized four times as the only authentication device that completely protects against user credentials being hacked, biometric information being stolen, and a cumbersome end user experience,” said Token CEO John Gunn.

Invixium Expands Beyond Biometrics

Toronto-based Invixium has debuted a new access control solution at this week’s Intersec Trade Show in Dubai. While the startup has made a name for itself with biometric access solutions, the IXM VERTU solutions is designed to read RFID cards and mobile credentials using BLE and NFC technologies. “We are humble enough to understand that not every door demands biometric security,” explained Invixium CEO Shiraz Kapadia.

Nigerian Patient Monitoring Startup Gets State Partnership

SignalADoc, the developer of a biometric patient monitoring solution, has established a partnership with Ministry of Health & Human Services in Nigeria’s Ekiti State that will see its Vital Sign Monitor app used in select general hospitals. The app uses face biometrics that SignalADoc says can monitor blood pressure, heart rate, respiration, blood oxygen levels, and stress levels derived from Heart Rate Variability.

NSW Labor Makes Biometric ‘Self-exclusion’ From Casinos a Campaign Issue

New South Wales’ Labor party has made the mandatory use of facial recognition by casinos a part of its campaign platform ahead of an election in March. The aim is to compel gaming establishments to let problem players “self-exclude” by enrolling their faces in a biometric surveillance system. That would ensure that security automatically flags and ejects any self-excluded person who shows up at a casino. ClubsNSW, a lobby group representing the industry, has been a proponent of this biometric approach.
