Secure ID solutions provider HID Global has integrated its Lumidigm biometric technology into its OMNIKEY smart card readers, the company has announced. That means that authorized personnel can authenticate their identities with the OMNIKEY readers using either smart cards or their fingerprints.
The integration is meant to streamline the enrollment and authentication process, using HID Global’s Lumidigm V-Series V371 fingerprint reader to leverage the simplicity of biometric authentication in those cases where a user’s smart card is not conveniently available. The V371 is highly advanced; originally developed as a national ID solution, it has been refined for adaptability to a range of additional applications including healthcare and financial services use cases. In addition to offering convenience, the system can also be deployed to ensure maximum security by requiring both smart card and fingerprint authentication. In a statement announcing the integration, HID Global vice president Paul Butler asserted, “Other anti-counterfeit methods have been used to combat card fraud, but only the V371 ensures authenticated users are the same people that were issued the cards.”
The integration is the product of HID Global’s acquisition of Lumidigm a little over a year ago, a move intended to shore up the company’s biometrics capabilities, and one that has clearly paid off. HID Global has also been promoting its HID Mobile Access and ActivID Tap Authentication products this year (as in the case of its presence at the HIMSS conference), in addition to generally making a good name for itself with some charitable work.
