HID Global has announced a new smart card for identity applications. Called the OSM Multitech card, it’s “one of the most secure citizen ID cards on the market,” according to a statement from the company.
The card allows issuers to laser-engrave biographic information on its front and encode data on its OSM stripe on the back, and to include further identity data on an embedded chip. HID Global executive Rob Haslam says there “has been no known instance of a successful attempt to compromise OSM technology’s digital security”, which the new card builds upon, suggesting it represents a highly secure identity solution. And the OSM Multitech card also features a contactless RFID chip.
The new smart card’s announcement comes soon after HID Global’s upgrades to its Lumidigm V-Series fingerprint readers, and may offer an opportunity for synergy between the offerings, given that the OSM Multitech cards could theoretically hold biometric data.
