HID eBook Shows How to Elevate the Passenger Journey With Biometrics

HID has published a new eBook outlining the advantages of biometric identity technology in air travel. Entitled “Elevating the Passenger Journey With Biometrics and Identity Verification“, the paper focuses in particular on using face biometrics as a “trust anchor”.

Essentially, the idea is to establish an irrefutable foundation for a passenger’s identity using facial recognition. An initial verification session matches a traveler’s face to their biographical information, such as by matching a face scan to the person’s passport. From there, the traveler can be identified throughout the airport just by their face, and with no particular effort required on their part.

That could have substantial effects across various air travel touchpoints that traditionally see heavy friction. Obvious examples include airport screening and boarding, where travelers normally have to present IDs and boarding passes; but the biometric technology can also smooth out the customer verification process in use cases such as lounge access and even paying for goods at a duty free shop.

HID’s eBook is careful to emphasize that these enhancements to the passenger journey aren’t just good for the customer, but for air travel stakeholders such as airports and airlines. Fiction is reduced, throughput is improved, and administrative costs are lowered.
